October is National Women’s Small Business Month and the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce would like to honor local women who own small businesses. Once a week for the month of October, we will be highlighting one business/woman in the Worthington area who has opened their own small business.
Lisa Federico is the owner and publisher of Northwest Columbus City Lifestyle, a new community lifestyle magazine that will be coming to Worthington homes this January. Lisa spent 30 years in corporate marketing focusing on marketing strategy. In an effort to spend more time in the community, she started her business in June of 2023 with the goal of positioning people and their unique stories first.
What services and goods does your business offer?
“Northwest Columbus City Lifestyle is a magazine that emphasizes the best of what our community has to offer and aims to inspire and uplift readers through entertaining articles, showcasing local businesses, and sharing unique experiences in and around the Worthington, Lewis Center and Linworth areas.
I feel like our communities are missing meaningful stories about our history, our people, and the great things we have going on here that make a difference in people’s lives. In a world of quick hit social media posts, Tik Tok and You Tube videos, I think people are craving more detailed connections - and that’s why I’m introducing the magazine to Worthington.”
What’s the most rewarding experience you’ve gotten out of having a business?
“I have heard SO MANY great stories that need to be told. Every business or non-profit I talk to I’ve learned something new. How many people know the story of the well known artist in one of our senior communities, or the legacy of the Harding family or the historic firsts of Worthington Foods? Did you know we have a local resident that the musical “Come from Away’ was based on? We have business owners who have accomplished amazing things and do amazing things for our community — Stay tuned, because we’ll be bringing these stories and more to you in 2024. I’m so grateful to be able to share them with you.”
What advice would you give your younger self about opening a business?
“Don’t be afraid. You can do this. Sometimes I think we get so attached to a paycheck someone else is providing. We often lose ourselves in corporate drudgery - we become people we don’t recognize. I would tell my younger self to dig deep to understand what really makes you happy and through that retrospect, you’ll find your purpose. I have learned that you get what you give. What you put out into the universe comes back to you in spades. Be kind, be patient, be giving — and success will come.”
